CASE STUDY: Integrated Solar PV system into Stone Slate Roof
Project Location: Colne, Lancashire
Check out this charming property in Colne that seems to date back to the early to mid-1800s! Our client estimates it’s around 200 years old, featuring incredibly thick barn stone slates, some up to 50 mm each. They decided to give it a traditional re-roof with a modern twist by adding integrated solar PV panels into the stone slate.
Such is the age of this property, it’s worth noting that one of the south-facing roof sections has a noticeable dip.
The finished result is a unique blend of old-world charm and modern sustainability!
The Remit
Our client asked us to give their property a complete roofing upgrade. As well as a traditional new roof they required a boost in the insulation and integrated
solar pv with battery storage.
Plus, they wanted us to ensure the roof was bat-friendly, just in case any decide to drop by in the future! 🦇
The Works – Integrating Solar PV into stone slate roof
We’re thrilled to have transformed this home into an energy-efficient haven while preserving its traditional charm. The integration of solar technology not only reduces energy bills but also contributes to a more sustainable future. Plus, our bat-friendly design ensures that local wildlife continues to thrive.
Here’s what we did:
- Used TLX Gold insulated felt for the roofing underlay and improved insulation to prevent cold bridging at the eaves.
- Installed 14 x 400W Viridian solar panels, creating a 5.6 kW peak system with a 10 kW battery storage.
- Strengthened 15 m² of roof area by adding extra rafters to support the structure.
- Integrated solar panels directly into the stone slate roof for a sleek look and reduced weight.
- We made sure the roof is bat-friendly, adding special access points for our flying friends. 🦇
We wrapped up this eco-friendly project in just four weeks, from January to February 2025.
