With the cost of energy on the increase, it is definitely worth while considering generating your own power. Installing solar panels has proven itself to be worthwhile for both you and for the environment, but battery storage is the next logical step to take — bringing even greater rewards. But what are the benefits of solar battery storage and is it worth installing? Would a solar battery system be a worthwhile investment for your home? That all depends on how much it would cost to install in the first place and how much it would save you.
If you are considering installing solar pv, there are many reasons why you should also invest in battery storage at the same time.
In May 2019, Which? conducted a survey and asked over customers who already had a solar pv battery installed why they installed it:
One of the biggest benefits of solar battery storage is that you can use your solar energy even after the sun goes down. But even without solar panels, a battery can be great for your home. With or without a solar system attached, you can have a battery on Economy 7 that charges up at night for half the price, for you to use the next day.
The amount you can save depends on the amount of energy you use and how much you can produce.
We expect, based on stats from Smarter Business and Octopus Energy, that your household uses 8.5–10kWh (kilowatt hours) of electric energy on average per day. According to UK Power, the average electric bill for a 3- or 4-bedroom house is £49 a month, £590 a year. But of course, bigger houses tend to use more energy.
Whatever your electric bill is, charging your battery on Economy 7 from the electric grid can cut it in half — and that’s without solar panels providing clean, renewable energy for free.
According to The Eco Experts, the average domestic solar panel has an output of around 265W (watts). After an hour, that’s 0.265kWh of energy per panel.
If you install a solar system with, for example, 315W panels, then just one panel sitting in the sun for 6 hours can produce up to 1.89kWh. Make it 5 panels for 6 hours, and you’ll generate up to 9.45kWh. Connect it to a solar battery, and you’ll likely have enough energy stored away to last you all day and night.
In short, you could make huge savings on your electric bills — maybe even cut them out entirely.
In that Which? survey we mentioned earlier, over 100 solar battery owners said how much they paid for their solar panel batteries:
At Green and Heritage Roofing, our solar battery storage, panels included, starts from around £8,000.
In partnership with our MCS Accredited Partner, Team Renewables, that includes the solar PV panels, a Hybrid Inverter, and battery storage. And there’s more…
As well as storing your energy, our solar systems can let you monitor your generation and consumption through myenergycloud.com. We also offer Zappi EV (Electrical Vehicle) charging, which comes with its own monitoring and control through myenergi.com and the myenergi app.
There’s just one question left to answer…
Please bear in mind that your solar PV panels must be installed on a structurally sound roof. Before making such a large investment, it’s worth thinking about the current state of your roof.
How much longer will it last before you need a re-roof?
Does it have proper insulation, to help save even more money on your bills?
Luckily, we also offer our solar panels and battery storage as part of a larger package, installing the pv system and re-roofing your property at the same time. Starting from around £15,000 for smaller houses and up to £30,000–35,000 for much larger houses, this includes:
There’s no doubt, solar batteries are a big investment for your home. In the short run, it would be cheaper to go without and get your electric the old-fashioned way. But in the long run, the benefits of solar battery storage will ensure your solar PV system with battery storage pays for itself, and then some, whilst doing wonders for your carbon footprint.
If you're looking to re-roof your property and need a solar or heritage roofing specialist, we can usually offer you an idea of price without visiting your home
